This is a special book, broad in its scope, subtle in its delivery and utterly gripping. The use of mythological characters, weaving in and out of the narrative like Shakespearian soothsayers is a masterstroke and I was soon turning the pages longing for the next rune (anyone who’s read the book will understand what I mean). Maddie’s story is told with breathtaking honesty and without a hint of self-indulgence and her relationship with her parents is particularly poignant. The narrative moves along at some pace, pausing now and then for reflection and then sweeping us forward to the next stage of what turns out to be an emotional and uplifting journey. A really clever, well-written and unforgettable book.
