Illustrated by Ellen Agee The Newcomer’s Dictionary is an A to Z of words that explore aspects of relocating. Whether you have moved or are considering a move, this dictionary will help to identify and describe the experience of being a newcomer. By Claire Hauxwell Meet Dandelion, our author’s alter ego – a flailing spouse and dedicated mom of two who’s a decade into her expat life and doesn’t know who the hell she is anymore. Dandelion’s schtick is getting old. Dandelion’s feeling uncomfortable in her own skin. Dandelion’s longing for the days when there was more to life than wandering the aisles of another damn grocery store in expatland. Dandelion’s life is a #shitastrophy.
I was getting side-eyes from passengers because it made me laugh out loud… a behind the scenes view of real-life transformation.” Sundae Bean, transformation facilitator and podcaster

The Newcomer's Dictionary by Joyce AgeeThe Newcomer’s Dictionary is an A to Z of words that explore aspects of relocating. Whether you have moved or are considering a move, this dictionary will help to identify and describe the experience of being a newcomer.
Filtered through Joyce Agee’s memories and illustrated by her sister, Ellen Agee, this book identifies the often hidden and complex feelings that can be experienced by newcomers – whether first-time, seasoned or expatriate – as they relocate to a new suburb, city or country. Now an Australian citizen, in writing this book Joyce has brought together the experiences of a nomadic expat with those of a newcomer child. She reflects on how her life has been impacted by the family’s frequent moves while she was growing up. Books, television programs and films were to become an emotional lifeline for the two sisters, giving them a sense of stability and continuity when everything else around them was constantly changing. The Newcomer’s Dictionary also explores how language, which evolves over time and across cultures, influences our perception of newcomers. It describes the newcomer identity, experiences and emotions – above all the feelings of being an outsider and the need to belong. Written by Wakanyi Hoffman, illustrated by Milena Weichelt.

Expat life stripped bare
Nine women share the emotional and practical realities of life away from 'home' Grief, loneliness, Brexit, motherhood, identity, belonging, rootlessness, drinking culture and integration are just some of the issues tackled in a series of powerful stories written by nine women on the challenges of expat life. In one of the first books of its kind, these women reveal some of the emotional upheavals and struggles that go hand-in-hand with moving away from their native ‘home’, which have, until now, remained largely untold. Divorce, death, alcoholism… these are women’s real stories about what lies beneath the Facebook veneer of life abroad. They may be a harsh wake-up call in many cases, but their stories are also refreshing, uplifting and beautifully told. Zoe Dare Hall, Sunday Times |
Matthew Smith was in Las Vegas, in September 2013 with his new wife when he suffered an allergy attack while dining out in a steak restaurant. As well as almost dying, the hospital trip racked up a whopping £210,000 medical bill – which Matthew says would’ve crippled him financially if his travel insurance hadn’t covered him. It was at this point, on his hospital bed, that he vowed to change his life forever - including his bad habits with money. |
Even during lockdown, the sexism continued. Women working from home report being asked to dress more sexually or wear more makeup for Zoom meetings. Many felt more likely to be harassed on the street because there were fewer witnesses. Sexism comes in many forms, ranging from seemingly harmless ‘jokes’ to threats of physical violence, but as the more blatant forms decrease, especially in the workplace, low-level sexism, otherwise known as microaggressions, is everywhere. |
